POPULATION PROBLEM

Population Problem: _ _ Prologue: In an interview given to Economic Times, JRD Tata had reminisced how Nehru once retorted to his concerns on rising population. “Nonsense, a large population is the greatest source of power of any nation,” the first prime minister of Independent India is believed to have told the industry doyen. Subsequently India’s bulging population was seen as threat to the country’s future so much so that Nehru’s grandson, Sanjay Gandhi, ran a controversial campaign of forced sterilization during the emergency (1975-77). Their present Prime Minister Narendra Modi red-flagged population explosion in the course of his Independence Day speech. Mainstream politicians, journalists, and academics frequently avoid discussing population issues since notions about population are often seen as being politically or ideologically motivated. As a result, population debates are generally argued from the fringes. Some groups characterize population growth as a Ponzi scheme, whereby increasing numbers of youth […]

Development of Nation

Development of Nation: _____ _____ Prologue: When evolution of human species occurred, all humans all over the world were same. Most people have lost sight of the fact that a short time ago—very short in terms of the life span of the earth—people were nomadic food gatherers, garnering an existence as best they could from what nature threw their way. It has been only about 10,000 years since the Neolithic Agricultural Revolution, when people changed from food gatherers to food producers. Throughout most of subsequent human history, civilizations have been based on a comfortable life for a privileged minority and unremitting toil for the vast majority. Only within the past two centuries, ordinary people are able to expect leisure and high consumption standards, and that only in the world’s economically developed countries. The total major countries of the world are 188 out of which only 32 are developed and remaining […]

Economic Development vis-à-vis Environment:

Economic Development vis-à-vis Environment: _ _ Prologue: “When the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten, and the last stream poisoned, you will realize that you cannot eat money,” Native American saying. A quote by Richard Wilkinson describes economic development as a development of more intensive ways to exploit the natural environment. We hurt the environment in more ways than you could possibly imagine. Misguided construction, irrigation and mining can deface the natural landscape and disrupt important ecological processes. Aggressive fishing and hunting can deplete entire stocks of species. Human migration can introduce alien competitors to native food chains. Greed can lead to catastrophic accidents and laziness to environmentally destructive practices. Will our children and grandchildren live in a better world, or will economic and social conditions decline? Every culture has worried over this question—often for good reason. One would think that modern man, living amid ever-rising material comforts […]

ECONOMY FOR PEOPLE

ECONOMY FOR PEOPLE:   Prologue: Despite being an intelligent doctor, I could not become rich because I did not compromise between my way of thinking and the thinking of others in my environment no matter whether others include spouse or family members or patients or friends or courts. I could not become corrupt no matter how many opportunities came in life. I know of many doctors who became rich by simply buying and selling lands rather than medical acumen but I could not even do that. I was perceived to be weak in economics by both friends and foes alike. I work in government hospital on contract basis and get rupees 30,000 per month as salary wages. I earn this money because I got MD degree and 23 years of experience in treating human illnesses. The money is paid by the people of India. Do all the people pay? No. […]

THE INTELLIGENCE

THE INTELLIGENCE : Abbreviations used: IQ = Traditional intelligence quotient. EQ = Emotional intelligence quotient. Intelligence of a living organism is defined as ability to receive, understand, process, memorize, comprehend, rationalize, learn, think and judge various sensory inputs from environment in a given circumstance and come out with best possible solution to the problem posed by environment and/or perform better in environment.Humans use brain for intelligence. I will not discuss the other meaning of intelligence;the information gathering. Every scholar in psychology has defined intelligence differently and there is no consensus about definition of intelligence and so my definition is open to criticism. Even a virus shows intelligence by adapting mutation for survival. Even a bacterium shows intelligence by synthesizing an enzyme to inactivate antibiotics. For lower species, intelligence is meant for survival and reproduction but for higher species like humans, intelligence could be anything from socializing to abstract thinking to reasoning to imagination to creativity. If another […]
